Save your money. Do not recommend. — Small serves, cold food, table in an area that smelt like a smokers den, expected more and got so much less. Beautiful decor and service OK but overall experience lacked so much. Would not recommend.
A girl night out — Amazing pub authentic food. Just Delicious food with yummy cocktails and a few wines that followed . A really special experience and before we hit the enmore theatre for a girls night of dancing and having fun.
Great Asian — Brilliant Asian food with Indonesian chefs. Where to start.... the food, we had the lunchtime banquet, lots to choose from and great value. All dishes we had were superb the best the duck San Chowy Bow and the hot chicken. The vegetarian fried rice was to die for. The service and atmosphere were also great. We will be back
Disappointing — This place has definitely gone downhill since the last visit. I deliberately booked a table in the terrace area because there were 5 of us and the seating is more comfortable in that part of the restaurant. When we arrived we were seated in the smelly goat bar which has tiny tables and more suited to couples. The food was disappointing and so was the service. Won’t be going back.
Has Merivale lost its way or is it just Enmore pretensions? — Styling and presentation was excellent. Glad we dressed to impress. Average tasting food, mediocre portions, including some of the hot food being sent out cold. Presentation was humble, and nothing with a wow. Manager was rude and generally non- attentive and poor service. Watch out for the 10% surcharge! What exactly did we pay $67 for? We love most of the food establishments in the Merivale stable but this was a huge disappointment.
The worst culinary experience of the decade…. — The worst Cantonese meal I’ve ever had. Go to any regional town and you’ll get better food Chinese food this. I’ve been to Mr Wongs and paid similar $ and skipped out the door delighted at the amazing food. The food and service were appalling. Waited 10+ minutes to order a drink and then longer for it to come. And $34 for a pretty average Pinot… My kids said, are Singapore noodles meant to be served cold? The $54 sweet and sour pork was appalling, the kids said it tasted like medicine. My Cantonese guest turned her nose up at the Sui Mai. The prawn entree was very good and the calamari was also solid. We paid for everyone’s food because we were so embarrassed as it was our choice to dine there. Some waiter asked me if everything was ok (not our main waiter but a guy in a blue shirt) and when I said I’d been waiting for ages he laughed and walked off. Everyone was shocked. When I finished eating it was decided it was best I wait at the pub rather than cause a scene.(and the wait staff at the Enmore Country Club were delightful and made an effort to improve my night) Awful food, awful service, awful value for money. Shame on Merivale!!
Not worth the price — The venue is fabulous, but the food is way overpriced. It was extremely expensive for very average food that you can get at any local Chinese restaurant for half the price. The service was also below average. Save your dollars and go to one of the tasty dumpling restaurants in the area.
POOR VALUE ! — Service excellent, very attentative. Creative atmosphere. We chose the $99 multi plate x 3 - perhaps a mistake we should have perhaps ordered separately. I thought it was very very ordinary, a glass of Cloudy Bay Sav Blanc was $41. All up with drinks $430 for 3. I won't be going there again.
Great food & terrific service — After a truly awful experience at a Hemmes establishment a few years ago, my wife and I vowed that we'd never eat in one again. (Thankfully, that experience was documented on a long lost Tripadvisor account, so we can't relive that nightmare. However, if you ever attend Ms G's on a Saturday night, I'd still suggest that you don't use the bathroom or expect reasonably paced service). Despite that, tonight we found ourselves at a loss over where to dine, as our usual local haunts were all chockers. So we found ourselves wandering up the stairs to Queen Chow. And I'm very glad we did. Both food and service were terrific. We had the set menu, which for around $100 per person provided a beautifully balanced and wonderfully executed degustation. Equally importantly, the service provided by the young staff - yes, my wife and I are old - was both efficient and charming. Special mention must be made of Nathan, a delightful and attentive server; and his equally lovely colleague Gerardine. Someone give these two a raise! And everybody else: if you're seeking a lovely take on Chinese classics in the inner west, among nice decor and a background playlist of retro funk, give Queen Chow a go. Justin: all is forgiven! I'm now crossing fingers that my next visit to one of your innumerable palaces of hipster dining will be equally impressive. Do go. And ask for Nathan.
Worst $30 cocktail of my life — I was there for 1 pre dinner drink for my birthday with friends. I read the menu and ordered the Margherita. It was in no way worthy of $30 for the following reasons: 1. It was not tasty. 2. No taste of tequila 3. Did not look impressive 4. Was not served in a cocktail glass. 5. The glass was full of giant ice cubes and half full with drink. The lack of caring and awareness received from the bar tenders for serving a substandard product was alarming. They informed me that I could have ordered a classic Margherita. How would I know that if it’s not on the menu? How would I know the price if it’s not on the menu? I am a local and will not return. Why would I pay exorbitant amounts of money for drinks I can make cheaper and better for myself at home? Something as basic as a Margherita. Bar tending 101. You go out to be delighted. That is not the case at Queen Chow.
Rude manager — The first time I set my feet in Queen Chow I was judged. It was my bday and it was the first time I was kicked out of a restaurant. I am a proud Aboriginal woman and have worked in hospitality for years. She was rude and disrespectful Thursday 6pm 18th Jan if I was the owner I would fire her xx
Nice dinner but end left a bad taste in my mouth — I went for dinner there with my husband for our anniversary( which I had mentioned in the booking). The food was very nice( although the pepper beef had quite a bit of sinew in the meat which shouldn’t have for the price). At the end of the meal they bought us a candle stuck to a plate? Seriously, if you going to do that either stick it in a cupcake or don’t bring anything at all.
Top Class Friendly Service — On walking in for a Sunday lunch it was a step back in time to a moody broody bar (love that) then upstairs to a surprisingly light and spacious dining space and bar. We went for a set menu and loved the starters Dim Sums were excellent, oysters delicious. The service was the best we had during our stay in Sydney, friendly, attentive and exceptionally efficient.
Nice tasty range of dishes, excellent service, high prices don't justify the quality — I had been aiming to come here for some time. I knew there was hype so I thought I'd try it out and brought two friends. First thing I will say is the wait staff were so friendly and helpful and attentive, honestly some of the best service I've had in some time, and the decor is really nicely done and welcoming, although my vegan friend wasn't impressed with all the stuffed dead animals. The menu is fairly simple with a few tweaks, I went for the Chong Qing or Szechuan chicken, my friends went for noodles and rice and the pork sang choy bao, they seemed pretty satisfied, and as an entree to nibble on we went for the salt and pepper cauliflower which was surprisingly delicious. My main was pretty tasty, wasn't overly spicy and was more of a dry rub than a sauce like I was expecting, but it was still relatively juicy and I was pretty happy with it. Would I order it again for $43? I doubt it, it was not good enough for that price. Honestly, I baulked at the prices for months which prevent me from coming in the past which with these cost of living expenses is unforgivable, and their egregious $50 no-show fee is a bit excessive, but I heard this is a Merivale policy so we have Justin Hemmes to blame for that I guess. I get that they're trying to prevent people booking and not showing up, but $50, really? For those reasons I can't give this place a perfect score, and until the prices come down I don't think I'll ever be back.
Accessible & LOUD..funn & vibrant,, very good Dim Sum..alas nothing much else any good..... — I knew they were doing "modern" Cantonese food here ..but when I saw what looked like classic dim sum pass our table I felt I had to try them, just in case ..& indeed they were pretty good! (& they certainly should've been for $39 !!!!.. nearly $5 a piece!!!) My guest fancied a buratta with Asian-influenced saucing next, & frankly speaking I'm sick of every chef & his dog thinking its good kitchen work these days to muck around with a decent buratta. Oh No. & this one was finished far too sweet & was priced at $25! >> & it wasn't even top quality! Still on a trad search after the delicious dumplings I saw listed good old Park& Prawn Wonton Soup..I just had to have it..but eeek it was dreadful. The weird-tasting broth was inedible & the giant silken won tons had some long tough sausage inside ..ghastly. Only $12 , but not worth being on the menu as It was neither seriously new food ...nor subsequently even worth eating. My final tilt at ordering trad. Cantonese cooking was absolutely intended to be a test > Char Kway Teow is an immutable classic..& this version only just passed muster. This terrifically attractive environment is far too noisy to conduct anything like a 'normal' conversation..indeed when I did get a surprisingly positive response to my early-in-the-night request to turn the blaring sound track down, I nonetheless was warned in the same breath it would go up even louder when the place got busier..so with nonsense like that in place + the relatively high prices I honestly think here really cannot be regarded as a place for good Chinese food. Nor conversing comfortably. But a funn place ?..sure thing!
Rip Off!!!! — Dropped in for a pint today $17.00 for a pint Sunday surcharge they say absolute scandal. Stop ripping your customers and locals off. 😡
Can’t wait to come back — Such a wonderful dinner at Queen Chow Enmore! The outdoor seating area is undercover and very aesthetic. The food was delicious with large portions so great value for money. Service was great. Will definitely be back!
Great food but watch the booze up-selling — Great food especially the Peking Duck, and wonton soup. However the drinks menu is pretty expensive and we really don’t appreciate the blatant “up selling”. I don’t mind having by wineglass refilled but it so obvious when the motivation is to sell another bottle. Came to over $400 for two people including Sunday service charge which right up there (for what was essentially posh Chinese).
Expected so much more — Queen Chow, Narooma. Ordered sizzling Peking beef & stir fried veg. Beef lukewarm, veg great. Then the wines - remember semi remote South Coast NSW. $22 a glass for a "nice" cab sav. Maybe Merivale is M for...
Good food, bad experience — Came here with friends for trivia. Despite the front bar being empty, we were crammed in a back corner with zero social distancing between the tables. The tables were barely big enough to seat us and our food. It was so excessively loud, with competing noise from the bar music which they didn’t turn off, the host, and many people trying to talk in a very confined space. It was overwhelming and almost anxiety inducing. The menu was good. A bit pricey, but the food was great. Service was prompt - we ordered via the QR code on the table, so can’t comment on friendless of staff. All in all, certainly won’t be back for trivia. Treat your customers with a bit more respect and host it in the front bar with more room and less noise.
