Mr. Wong

Good. — Very rich menu. Nice environment. Good food. However, I found the restaurant very expensive.

This was not your typical Chinese restaurant. Mr Wong is located in a dark alley behind a busy road around Circular Quay in Sydney, Australia. The location was so off the typical path that if I didn't know about this restaurant, I would never have walked by and decided to stop by. The decor was classically Chinese and modern at the same time. On the traditional side, they had roasted ducks hanging off a rack, yet the interior was so beautifully and tastefully decorated that it didn't feel tacky or old-fashioned in an offensive way. The food was spot on. We ordered the following: 1. Kang-pao chicken 2. Bamboo, woodear and celery stir fry - this dish was punched with flavor, had great umami, my only complaint was that the bamboo shoots were a bit tough 3. Hot pot stuffed tofu with pork and shrimp in abalone sauce - this was a WINNER! This dish felt like home. It was so comforting and the flavors and textures were in perfect harmony. This dish was served hot which I loved since Sydney is still in winter. It was a perfect dish and the concept worked well. Service was excellent. 5/5 Ambiance was excellent 5/5 Food was good. 4.5/5 We had a great time! I recommend making a reservation. The place was full when we first arrived for lunch when it opened at noon on a Saturday.

We came to Mr Wong's expecting good Cantonese food. We left having enjoyed one of the best meals I have ever eaten. We ordered one of the banquet menus in order to get to taste a little bit of everything on the menu. I would recommend this if you are in a small group, otherwise you can likely sample a lot of the menu family style. Each part of the meal was exquisite and each course better than the last. There were so many highlights of the evening--from the chef selected dim sum to the prawn toast to the deep fried ice cream, but I will limit myself to talking in depth about two food items. The calamari was fresh and light and was likely the best calamari me and my husband have ever had. The sweet and sour pork was spectacular. It came in the form of a cube that appeared crisp on the outside but almost melted in your mouth the moment you bit into it because it was so tender. It was the best item of the meal which is saying something because there wasn't an item I ate that wasn't fabulous. The cocktails were delicious, the service was impeccable. If I lived in Sydney this is the place I would go for every special occasion.

Ok if you think you are a celebrity, but if you want to have an enjoyable meal, there is better. — The location and atmospere & decor are first rate. The service is designed to push patrons through their meal as quickly as possible. Its impossible to sit and joy a leisurely meal becasue they want you out so they can turn over the table. The food is very pricey. We had one of the banquets, and the food was fine, but everything had loads of onions to fill out the dishes lack of meat. Its a dining experience that has been well designed by Merivale to use push service techniques to maximise the amount of wine you order, the food chosen to be consumed in the minimum amount of time so they can charge you alot of money for a 90 minute dining experience before you are told they want the table and finish up, pay the bill & leave. I found the staff bordering on aggressive trying to get rid of us after we had spent $2000 on food & wine. I wont be going back.

Best Asian Food in the Rocks — It is by far our favourite Asian restaurant in the Rocks. To me as an Asian, it is important to have knowledgeable service staff who understand customers’ tastes. We’ve never had a bad meal here over the past 10 years. It is pricy but one pays for quality in service and ambience.

Very poor — A terrible experience. Queued outside for 20mins even though we’d already made a reservation for our anniversary. Ordered the $150 set menu for 2 - there is literally only 1 other service on the set for 2 menu. Somehow the waiter got it wrong. Wine was not readily available after being g decantered - had to wait 10mins for it to be poured A dreadful experience for what is a fantastic venue. WILL NOT be going back. You’d get better wontons in Westfield alongside a very average service

Just Excellent — My wife and I had an excellent meal at Mr Wong’s which we really could not fault. We ordered the Singapore Noodles, a Small Mr Wongs Fried Rice and Green Beans. The portion size is pretty big and probably it would have been enough for 4. If we had not been staying in a hotel, we would have got a doggy bag. All the dishes were excellent, service was friendly and efficient and the wine list was enormous. We selected a German riesling from the Nahe area which was great. We will return on our next trip to Sydney.

Walked in for late lunch at 2:30pm Sunday. Lousy chaotic dinning environment, dark underground night pub style..Crammed with tables . Music loud . Waiters rushing through tables...simple menu with Insane markup price on common items. e.g. $30AUD for 3 small dumplings ($10 per bite for basic pork and flour!) and $50 AUD for a plate of basic fried rice is pure robbery. $60 Charsiu pork slice with honey sweetened sauce on top...$64 dish for 5 shrimps. They charged $5.5 per seat. 10%tax . It was Sunday so there was 10% surcharge of total bill. Don't let the "Two Hats" status glossy Merivale branding, or endless hype fool you--this place is one of the most absurdly overpriced dining traps in Sydney CBD. Considering Sydney's average full-time salary sits around $85k-$100k AUD, this level of pricing is totally disconnected from reality. Paying on overpriced dishes won't buy you a decent luxuries. You pay 3-4x more in expenses but below average service and meal. Very disappointing. No recommendations at all.

Top notch — Was my birthday they wished me which was nice . The food was without doubt the best Chinese I have eaten in Australia. Absolutely delicious, authentic and tasty .

A Not Miss in Sydney — First time in Sydney and this place is a not miss! Service was above good and they were so friendly. The food menu is very big and everything we tried was excellent. I suggest sharing food so you can try more than one dish. The fried ice cream is a not miss! It may seem pricey but was worth every penny.

Wonderful — Such an enjoyable experience. Beautiful restaurant with great atmosphere and attentive, professional staff. There were 13 of us but unlike most restaurants, we were not asked to choose a set menu. We therefore chose a large selection of our favourite dishes which were all delicious. We all loved the duck pancakes. The food came out at a nice pace so we were able to enjoy a relaxed leisurely lunch.

Iconic — Iconic Chinese restaurant in Sydney- walking distance to Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House. Absolutely amazing food in an industrial Chinese chic multi floor restaurant. Professional waiters that really know the dishes and offer personal service.

Delicious — I could not believe how busy it be was for a Tuesday night. There’s really not much to say except YUM! The food was delicious. The Char SUI was one of the best I had, the duck, I’m still thinking of it. The fried rice again was outstanding well done. The staff were a delight

Enjoyable and atmospheric Cantonese restaurant — A colleague from Sydney introduced me to a lunctime treat at Mr Wongs. Warehouse chic, great atmosphere and excellent service - busy but dishes came quickly. Dim sum, salt and pepper calamari, Kung Pao chicken plus excellent sticky rice and refreshing green tea. An open kitchen and some 30's style washroom facilities give the whole restaurant an uplifting vibe - one to visit again.

Mr Wong is always up to the task — Recently had a business meeting at Mr Wong and as usual the service was great. Barely has to explain what I wanted for my 6 guests and the waiter completely understood and fantastic food came. The prices are getting higher, but I imagine is the place is always in high demand. I love the location in the back lane and never has trouble getting in.

Celebration — Didn't really know what to expect but definitely an experience to remember. Was disappointed with restrictions to table reservations but having seen how popular can understand. Food, duck was beautifully presented. Staff appear to be well trained and on the whole "on the ball". Main criticism being rushed. Hadn't even taken sip of pre-dinner drinks when food and carafe of wine appeared all together. Would have felt more welcoming given an extra 10mins or so to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Loved Everything About this Dining Experience — We had a wonderful dinner at Mr Wong's whilst holidaying in Sydney and golly I'll be very keen to return on my next trip. This restaurant is only 2mins walk from the Bridge Street light rail stop so very central and easy to get to. The food was outstanding, service superb and we loved the overall ambience of the place. A very cool vibe indeed. Our server was brilliant, he gave us great advice when we were ordering as to what would go together etc as the menu is large and we would have been at a bit of a loss without his help. There is the banquet option as well and we would have chosen that but we had one of our group who didn't eat seafood so decided to choose ourselves. We enjoyed all items but the beef cheek , lamb ribs, and peking duck were a standout. And to finish we shared a couple of desserts but my favourite by far was Wong's pavlova! I would return for that alone!! This is a wonderful restaurant that is constantly busy so make sure you book, they do have walk in's but it's so popular you might be waiting awhile. To finish the night there is a lift that takes you downstairs to a very cool speakeasy bar which had live music playing. Our best dining experience in Sydney on this trip, shared with very dear friends We expected the bill to be very large so were pleasantly surprised, we thought it well priced for the quality of food

Sometimes a restaurant nails every aspect. Mr Wong did it during my visit there and based on the foot traffic and wonderful reviews, it delivers every time. The restaurant is tucked away on a sort of back street. Kinda reminded me of the cool restaurants and speakeasies hidden in NYC's Chinatown. There are at least two floors from what I can see and the vibe is immaculate. Great date or group spot. My group had a reservation but we did have to wait a few minutes to be seated. Once we were, our server was awesome (I wish I remembered her name). But let's talk food. The oysters and Ora King Salmon were fantastic. We also ordered prawns, a certain beef order (I forget the exact names) as well as the special fried rice. Everything hit -- including the drinks. Looking forward to my next trip to Sydney (and hitting this spot up).

Fantastic Cantonese Style Food — This was our first visit to Mr. Wong. Although located is in a rather obscure alleyway, the reason becomes apparent when you step inside the heritage building with its massive wooden beams and old warehouse vibe. The food was outstanding - the tastiest Cantonese style food I've ever tasted. The steamed dumplings were to die for, as were the Peking duck pancakes. The staff were the most efficient I've seen in a long time - nothing was too much bother, even rushing in to clean up a spilt drink and telling us not to worry at all. This is how service should be. I can not speak too highly of Mr Wong, and it is now etched into my go-to list when visiting Sydney. Thoroughly recommended.

Wow wow wow — Our evening at Mr Wong was the much-anticipated highlight of our trip. Situated in a stunning building, you are immediately blown away by the buzzy atmosphere. There is so much to look at! We were guided in our ordering by a fantastic waiter, and he was spot on with all his recommendations. My husband doesn’t eat gluten and he was able to enjoy his meal to the fullest. A thoroughly delicious meal with top quality ingredients. We had expected it to be pricey but were pleasantly surprised by the bill.
